GEB Secondary School Project Slideshow |

GEB Secondary School Project is getting closer to reality. |
|
Just
over a month from the magic day
of 08/08/2008, supporters of GEB Secondary project have got something to
be proud of. The
project is off the ground. Many detractors
were
pessimist about this project! However, thanks to Almighty God and the
will power of its devoted supporters who believed otherwise. In addition
to its supporters, deep appreciation is due to the project's leader
Dr. Beileh, the project's
hardworking engineers, and the project's relentless voluntary workers.
History is in the making. It is now time to join this pioneering team who decided to leave a lasting legacy by
making a reality the first-ever rural boarding Secondary in the country!
Taking the role of a government is
not an easy task, but waiting a government action forever is not an option
to GEB Secondary supporters. Let's join
hands and give the opportunity of EDUCATION to the most neglected children in our homeland. |

The GEB Secondary Project is in full Gear. |
|
Today
(13/08/2008) a
READ/IQRA
inspection team made a surprise visit to GEB, in which the construction
work of GEB Secondary School is already going on in full gear. As they
reached there around 11:10, Engineer
Atteye,
the leading engineer of the project, briefed the team with the following
inspiring information: So far, the foundations for 6 classrooms and 4
dormitories were completed, parts of the Administration Office was also
finished, planning next to start the foundations of 4 toilets. The team
also witnessed the high morale of workers as a whole.
Engineer Atteye also informed the team that he has finished the
assessment of water for UNICEF as he is now planning to report soon. |

|
The day has arrived... |
|
On
Friday August 8, 2008 at 8 O'clock in the morning, a dedicated
group of READ/IQRA supporters (headed by Dr. Beileh) laid the first
stone of the historic project of the Geb Secondary School. Engineers
Atteyeh and Bilaal immediately started work with their workers.
GEB is
110 KM from Borama through Baki and amazingly equal distance from Hargeisa. It
is located on the junction between the roads from Hargeisa and Borama to
Djibouti. |

Albert Einstein
once said “The
world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but
because of those who look on and do nothing.”. The
Awdal Diaspora from Ottawa, Canada, refused to just look over and do
nothing. Thanks to their generous
humanitarian
assistance
they sent to the victims of the natural disaster that recently befell in
parts of awdal region. -

The Threat of Rattle Snakes in the
Coastal Awdal region of Somalia. |

According to the U.S. army field survival manual, venomous snakes
use their venom to secure food; however, they also use it for
self-defense. “Human accidents occur when you don't see or hear the
snake, when you step on them, or when you walk too close to them.
Snakes are found in all tropical, subtropical, and most temperate
regions. Some species of snakes have specialized glands that contain
toxic venom and long hollow fangs to inject their venom. No single
characteristic distinguishes a poisonous snake from a harmless one
except the presence of poison fangs and glands. Only in dead
specimens can you determine the presence of these fangs and glands
without danger”.
Some of the highly dangerous snakes with powerful
neurotoxic venom that affects the nervous system, causing
respiratory paralysis are found in Somalia, particularly in the
coastal and mountainous regions where the population is mostly
nomads.
For centuries these vipers
have claimed the lost of lives and limbs and human fatalities in
this area. Hundreds of nomadic populations in Somalia are daily
victims of snake bites (known as Abeeso
by the locals), which results an immediate death, neurological
effect and sometimes disfigurement or damage to limbs. The attack by
these deadly snakes is much more potent at night when nomadic or
rural areas people are traveling or even while asleep on the ground
inside their homes. Very seldom do these nomads use proper shoes to
protect themselves from these deadly snakes and it becomes more
dangerous at night, especially in the absence of hospitals, lack of
available medicine and health professionals in the immediate areas.
And many people are dying under these unfortunate and helpless
circumstances. Many families have been affected by the sudden loss
of love ones and the whole communities in these regions have been
terrorized by these deadly snakes, especially when these people have
to perform their routine nightly functions, whether traveling or at
home, without light. Unfortunately, in the nomadic lifestyle people
are defenseless and have no way of saving their lives from the
deadly venom, both neurotoxic and hemotoxic, which attacks their
important organs, especially the nerves, blood cells and circulatory
systems and causing internal hemorrhaging.
We are desperately
appealing to the world to save the lives of these vulnerable
communities. All expert suggestions, safety guidelines, medicine and
material supports are appreciated.
We are also encouraging
people in the area to use the guidelines posted in this website to
help them minimize the risk of getting bitten by these deadly snakes
(Abeeso).

WHO ARE WE: |
|
READ
(Rural
Education
And
Development) is a local Non-Governmental Organization
(NGO) established as a non-profit Organization on 24th July 2000 in
Awdal region of Somalia by a group of its indigenous teachers,
engineers, doctors and administrators who voluntarily offered their
time and money to serve their war-affected community, particularly
young generations in the most neglected and remote rural areas of
the Awdal region and the District of Gabiley who have no chance
whatsoever to get access to schools in their remote localities. |
|
|
|
ACTIVITIES: |
|
READ's Initial goal was to extend
educational services to the most neglected and remote rural villages
in Awdal coastal areas and western parts of Gabiley District, so
READ began its educational activities in early January 2001 and
opened sixteen (16) rural Primary Schools. However, after
successfully carrying out its goal for the 5th year, READ activities
now cover more rural settlements than ever in the areas of education
by establishing more schools (currently 23), enrolling more students
(see
this table)
and in developmental projects by establishing close coordination with
other local and international NGO's in the area to realize for the
target communities more developmental projects such
as
distributing food ration
to famine-stricken areas, establishing schools, MCH centers,
etc.
(see details).

DONATION OPPORTUNITIES: |
|
Besides
its quest to provide basic Education to every rural child of the target area,
READ
NGO has a variety of giving opportunities to help impoverished children
and their families overcome their burdens. However you choose to give, you will
make a direct impact in the lives of poor children and their communities in the
remote areas around the Awdal region and its neighbouring Gabiley District of
Somalia . Your donations will help provide them with essentials for education
and improve their living conditions. More than anything, though, your gift will
help these children on their way to becoming self-sustaining adults. You will
truly make a difference.
Child Sponsorship
Sponsorship is a very personal way to improve a needy child's life. It gives
you a chance to share a unique relationship with a rural child. The
program is considered an ongoing commitment, although you aren't under
any obligation.
Teacher Sponsorship
Sponsorship is a very personal way to encourage a volunteering teacher in a
rural school. It gives you a chance to share a unique relationship with
a teacher. The program is considered an ongoing commitment, although you
aren't under any obligation.
One-Time Donation
If you aren't interested in sponsoring a child, you can make a one-time
donation every now and then to help poor children.
Donation in Name (in honor/in memory of someone)
Not sure about the right gift to give to a loved one? Make a donation to
READ Programs in his or her name. It's a gift that gives twice -- to
your loved one and to poor children around the Awdal region and District
of Gabiley of Somalia.
Development/Emergency Donation
Whether it's a natural disaster that affects an entire country, a house
fire that involves a family, or a medical emergency that plagues just
one child, READ is there to help. These children and their families --
who already have next to nothing -- need extra support.
Youth
Program
The Youth Program is a project specifically for sponsored adolescents that
aims to guide the teenagers in the right direction, so they can become
self-sustaining adults.
Vocational Education Fund
HOPE - Helping Overcome Poverty with Education Program encourages poor
families to see the light at end of the dark tunnel.
Eid-Al-Adha & Eid-Al-Fitri
